Following the news of the fire on Monday 21st May, a statement was made by Bill Ferris, Chief Executive of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust:
"The news of the fire on Cutty Sark is devastating for all those engaged in preserving Britain’s maritime heritage for future generations. After spending years in raising funds for an imaginative and exciting programme of restoration and interpretation it is really sad that so much damage should have happened just as she found a sustainable future. Let us all hope that the fire does not mean the end of this national treasure. Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust, along with all organisations involved in the maritime heritage and its conservation will do all it can to support the Cutty Sark Trust in seeking a way forward that will see this great ship restored to her former iconic glory.
The response to the news of the fire has demonstrated the affection that the people of this country hold for their maritime past, something not always so clearly shown, if there is one positive to be taken from this incident it is hoped that it will be the recognition of how important such artefacts are to our identity and how important their preservation is."
