The Historic Dockyard Railway will be operating, running demonstration freight train, by either steam and / or diesel locomotives this weekend.

Over the weekend of 18th & 19th September you will feel that you have stepped back in time as you experience the increasingly popular annual Salute to the ‘40s event. Visitors who pre-book a ‘Hidden Heritage‘ walking tour on 11 or 12 September will be able to discover for themselves some of the hidden treasures of The Historic Dockyard not normally accessible to visitors. This year’s tour will include the Ropery Cock Loft, an area which provides an uninterrupted view of this magnificent building and the Manilla Room housing old spinning equipment, both within the Ropery complex.

Heritage Open Days is a national campaign allowing the public access to areas of, or whole, buildings not normally open to the public, thus providing an insight into more of our nation’s heritage.  Due to the nature of the historic buildings and areas of The Historic Dockyard not normally open to the public being visited on these tours, steep steps and uneven surfaces need to be negotiated. Therefore these tours are not suitable for visitors with mobility impairments. Special arrangements can be made for such visitors by contacting Pam Wood, Visitor Services Manager at the dockyard.
