Architectural Scheme

The architectural scheme provides an exciting and cost-effective approach which protects the significance of No. 1 Smithery as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade II* listed building.

Pipe Bending Floor A "building within a building" approach has been taken to ensure that stringent environmental and security requirements are met whilst allowing the core fabric and significance of the building to be protected. This approach will allow the building "to be read" within the context of its original use by leaving elements such as the pipe-bending floor and the patina of two hundred years use on the walls.
