How to trace your Dockyard Ancestors

Former Dockyard workers

Chatham workers aboard HMS/m Warspite

We are always keen to help people investigating their family's history. To help with this, staff and volunteers at the Royal Dockyard Library have started a project to create a database of all the named individuals we have in our records. This is a long process but we will put the results here on the website as soon as we are able.
In the meantime, if you have enquiries, please don't hesitate to get in touch with our Library on 01634 823800 or email jchambers@chdt.org.uk|
In addition, if you have information on a family member who worked at the dockyard at any point in its history and would like to share that information with other researchers, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Naval Ancestors

If you are searching for family members who were in the Navy, please be aware that we don't hold Naval or Royal Marine personnel records. The National Archives hold records for the period 1790-1923.  http://nationalarchives.gov.uk | For men and women who served after 1926, the records are still held by the Ministry of Defence and details of how to obtain those records can be found at http://www.veterans-uk.info|
