The Modern Lifeboat Service

  • The RNLI has provided the lifeboat service for the UK and Republic of Ireland since 1824
  • There are more than 330 active lifeboats at over 230 lifeboat stations
  • 2006 saw 8,377 lifeboat launches and made 8,015 rescues 
  • Modern Lifeboats range from 4.9m high-speed inflatable inshore lifeboats to 17m all-weather lifeboats and they are manned by highly trained, largely volunteer crews
  • Every penny required to maintain the lifeboat service is raised from voluntary contributions
  • The RNLI is a charity which depends entirely on voluntary contributions and legacies
